Press Release

Gas storage neutrality charge to be abolished from January 1, 2026

Berlin/Düsseldorf, 20. November 2025 Trading Hub Europe GmbH (THE) will not levy a surcharge pursuant to Section 35e of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) to ensure that gas storage facilities meet their filling level requirements (gas storage neutrality charge) from January 1, 2026. The non-levying of the gas storage neutrality charge is conditional upon the abolition of the surcharge procedure when the amended EnWG comes into force. If, contrary to expectations, the amendment to the law does not come into force, the gas storage neutrality charge will continue to amount to EUR 2.89/MWh from January 1, 2026.

The background of the gas storage neutrality charge levied to date is the provisions of the EnWG, which stipulate filling level requirements for storage facilities. Since the law came into force in 2022, THE has taken various measures in accordance with the legal requirements to ensure security of supply. These included, in particular, the filling of various gas storage facilities.
